Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

  By Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.

  His house is in the village though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound's the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

Robert Forest is one of my favorite poets. You've heard, I'm sure, his famous poem The road not taken. But today I want to recommend you another poem from him, which has touched my heart and brought me warmth and brightness in this dark cold winter. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.

I guess the poem itself is a tribute to the winter, dispelling its coldness and brutality while melting our hearts. For some reason, I prefer to read the Chinese translation, from which I understand and feel the poem better. When it comes to original English one, I couldn't get the full picture which the poem has depicted in a subtle way. Maybe that is because of language gap. Even though we have studied English for many years, something is still out of reach.

Snow is always welcomed by me, but this time it changes a little bit. The expressway is impassible due to the heavy snow. As a consequence, I'm trapped in this lonesome and freezing dorm and gripped by the fear of uncertainty. You must think it queer that I still have this kind of romance to appreciate a poem when the situation is grim, but on second thought, when you can do nothing but wait, then you shall wait in a more patient way.

We are so easily at the mercy of the weather and spiritually, we are also an instrument of God.

I also have miles to go before I get home,

And miles to go before I sleep.

  The half-stripped trees

  struck by a wind together

  bending all

  the leaves flutter drily

  and refuse to let go

  or driven like hail

stream bitterly out to one side

  and fall

  where the salvias, hard carmine

like no leaf that ever was

  edge the bare garden.

In winter Snow often visits us.

My life is full of hexagon flakes.

  Whenever north winds blow

  I begin to expect snow

The snow that whitens the whole world,

But brings trouble to our friend bird

The trees putting on caps overnight,

The roofs covered by white blanket.

  Last night came the first snow of the year;

We’re living in a new world.

At the snow my heart lept,

The snow before the door well kept.

I rode to school by bike,

  Pedaled hard, but felt happier.

  Some people slipped,

But no one quarrelled or cursed.

The girls play snow on the playground,

Running after one another like wild,

  With gigles in their wake

  Thowing snowballs they make.

I wish I were young and fast

  Throwing snow to whoever runs last;

Or I could write in the snow

My beautiful lines to praise Snow
